Why Videoconferencing?
Videoconferencing has many applications. It eliminates the need to travel for a meeting, a seminar, a conference, an interview or a group discussion. It offers an interactive audio-visual way to communicate effectively between different locations. Videoconferencing can be used for local sites as well as for remote sites.

Who uses Videoconferencing?

Videoconferencing is a very practical and effective way for Administrators, Faculty, Staff and students to meet and discuss important matters with people in remote locations. People with tight schedules and demanding time constraints can benefit from videoconferencing.
Suitable events include:

  • Remote guest speakers
  • Employee interviewing and training

  • Vendor presentations

  • Students' group discussions with remote universities

  • Ongoing cross- cultural dialogues

Videoconference Infrastructure & equipment
- The university possesses the following infrastructure to facilitate VC sessions:

Gateway: (Ezenia Encounter 3000 Netgate)

Encounter 3000 Netgate enables multimedia conferencing (Video, Audio and Data) between H.323 (IP) and H.320 (ISDN) standards-based end points and MCUs (Multi Cast Unit). It is responsible for switching incoming/outgoing videoconference calls from ISDN (H.320) to IP (Local Area Network, H.323). This enables Videoconferences to take place anywhere on campus and all over the world.

Gatekeeper:

Performs address translation from aliases and telephone number to the Internet Protocol (IP) address. It also communicates with other gatekeepers using IP network resources and it supports address resolution and connection between local area network (H.323) endpoints within a zone using alias names and addresses.

Encounter eCMS

The Encounter Centralized Management System (Encounter eCMS) is a Web browser-based program that facilitates scheduling and managing multi conferences that run on one or more Encounter NetServers. Encounter eCMS maintains common data files with information about users and conferences, providing a comprehensive view of IP network conferencing resources.

Polycom Stream Station:

is a unit that provides the facility of web casting (broadcasting the Videoconferences live over the Internet) as well as video-on-demand (Videoconferences can be recorded and published on the web for later viewing).

Polycom View Station 512 Camera:

High performance and extraordinary value-ViewStation SP is a fraction of the cost of competing systems-integrated systems ideal for small conference rooms, executives suites and professional offices. Great business quality video, plus audio and presentation capabilities. Fully interoperable with existing videoconferencing systems. Small enough to sit conveniently on top of any size S-video or composite monitor.
